About 60 days from transplanting
Early ballhead summer cabbage, Cabbage Derby Day has good resistance against bolting.
Sow seeds mid February in pots or trays under glass, then transplant outdoors for earliest heads in June. Alternatively sow seeds outdoors from mid March to end of May, thinly in a prepared seedbed, 13mm deep.
Transplant when large enough to handle, about 5 weeks from sowing, in to well prepared soil in a sunny spot, allowing 38cm each way between plants. Plant firmly and water in. Compact plants allow closer spacings and less wasted outer leaves.
Later sowing from end of May will produce quality heads to October.
Eaten raw or cooked, cabbages are an excellent source of Vitamin C. Try to use all healthy outer leaves, as the darkest green leaves contain the most nutrients.
Delicious boiled, steamed or shredded raw into salads.
